Joker 2 director reveals he’s done with DC after sequel releases to 39% on Rotten Tomatoes

Bad news Joker fans – Todd Phillips, the director of Joker and Joker 2, appears to be done bringing the crown prince of crime to the screen.

Phillips mentioned this in a recent interview following the release of Joker 2, aka Joker: Folie a Deux.

The film received mixed-to-positive reviews when released at the Venice Film Festival, however this week’s early screenings have seen catastrophic reviews from viewers.

This has culminated in a plummeting Rotten Tomatoes score, which at the time of writing has fallen as low as 39 percent.

Johnny Oleksinki of The New York Post said in their one-out-of-four-rated review: “For nearly two and a half hours, director Todd Phillips’ pathologically unnecessary movie cycles through so many potential reasons to exist… it ultimately never finds a satisfying one.”

Though it’s unclear how much was pre-planned and how much was in response to this reaction, Phillips is calling it quits.

He told The Hollywood Reporter, when asked about the possibility of a stand-alone film about Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn introduced in the sequel: “It’s not really where this movie is headed for me. I feel like my time in the DC Universe was these two films.”

Sorry Joker fans, but if another is coming, it looks like Phillips will not be at the helm.

He said of the process of getting Lady Gaga on board as Quinn: “I think we sent her half the script, and she texted me pretty quickly that she was really into it, that she loved it and everything you want to hear.

“I went out to her house, and we met about what it was going to be, the rest of it, because we hadn’t written it yet.

“[Co-writer] Scott Silver and I are notoriously slow writers.”

The film has not been well received by fans, who have been writing vociferous reviews on Twitter.

One focused on the common criticism of the fact that it’s a musical, and read:

“Musicals are good and there should be more of them.

Joker 2 is bad because it’s nonsensical, unfocused, and the story has no reason to exist. Not because it’s a musical.”

Another read: “What makes Joker 2 so bad is that it refuses to commit to ANYTHING.

“There’s no theme at all, the court scenes are boring and the shock value ending is worse than I expected.

“Even the musical elements feel tacked on and interrupt the pacing. A total waste of time, never cook again”.

A third claimed to have witnessed walkouts, saying: “Never seen it happen before but every musical set piece this film did, more and more people kept leaving the theatre.”

Much to the delight of fans, the trailer for Joker 2, titled Joker: Folie à Deux, has finally dropped.

And I think we can all agree, if you didn’t want to see it before (why not?) – you want to now. Check it out:

The trailer gives us our first look at Harley Quinn, played by Lady Gaga.

She is joining the returning Joaquin Phoenix who is stepping back into the shoes of Joker after having won an Oscar for Best Actor in 2020.

The first Joker was expected to be a hit – but no one could have predicted how massive it went.

Grossing over a billion at the box office, 12 Oscar nominations, and being about the only film people talked about for months – a sequel was always bound to happen.

Gaga’s addition as Harley Quinn is an inspired one, as she takes over the massive shoes of Margot Robbie who played the role in three separate DC films.

Gaga, however, is the perfect choice for the role for one key reason.

Joker 2, aka Joker: Folie à Deux, is going to be a musical.

Variety, who broke the news that the film would be a jukebox musical, said: “Insiders privy to filming and early versions of Todd Phillips’ eagerly awaited sequel to Joker tell Variety the movie leans heavily towards being ‘mostly a jukebox musical,’ as it integrates at least 15 reinterpretations of ‘very well-known’ songs.

“One is said to be ‘That’s Entertainment’ from the 1953 musical ‘The Band Wagon,’ famously associated with Judy Garland.”

Todd Phillips, who directed The Hangover and War Dogs prior to Joker, is set to return to direct the second film.

Fans are beyond excited having seen the trailer.

One said on X (formerly known as Twitter): “God damn what a beautiful trailer.”

Another added: “Looks so good. I didn’t think a sequel was needed but now I want this film injected in my veins.”

Speaking at Cinemacon, director Todd Phillips said ‘Joker 2 is a movie where music is an essential element, but doesn’t veer too far from the first film’ according to DiscussingFilm.

As well as Gaga and Phoenix, Zazie Beetz will return from the first film, and will be joined by Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Ken Leung, and Steve Coogan (no really, that Steve Coogan).

The trailer confirms the fact that the film will be a musical, as well as previewing the budding romance between Harley Quinn and The Joker.

Releasing 4 October, I think we can all agree, after that trailer we are all f**king hyped for it to drop.

Joker 2 has released a new trailer for the highly anticipated film, which is set to release later this year.

The upcoming sequel, Joker: Folie À Deux, will bring back Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker, as well as introducing Lady Gaga as his love interest, Harley Quinn.

The trailer was preempted by a 24-hour live stream by Warner Brothers with a waiting screen of ‘The Joker and Harley Show’. You can watch the trailer here:

The set is very similar to the Murray Franklin show from Joker, in which Phoenix’s Joker was interviewed by Robert De Niro’s Franklin.

Joker: Folie À Deux picks up after the events of Joker and sees the titular character being admitted to Arkham State Hospital.

Whilst there, he meets Harley Quinn, the ‘love of his life’ and long-time comic book partner in crime.

And from there, the two ’embark on a doomed romantic misadventure’.

The film’s first trailer featured numerous elements which had some fans worried it would be a musical – including the two performing at a club together before waltzing through the streets of Gotham.

Despite this, director Todd Phillips addressed fan concerns that it would be a musical, telling Entertainment Weekly: “We never really talked about it like that, but I like to say it’s a film where music is an essential element.

“To me, that doesn’t veer too far from the first film.”

Phillips went on to state that everything would make sense when you sit down to watch the film.

He said: “Arthur [Fleck]’s weird and aloof and all these things, but he has music in him. He has a grace to him,

“That informed a lot of the dancing in the first film. It didn’t feel like that big of a step here. It’s different, but I think it’ll make sense when you see it.”

Gaga will also be joining the likes of Margot Robbie and Kaley Cuoco, who’ve previously played Harley in the Suicide Squad film series and HBO Max’s Harley Quinn.

But despite the daunting task, the singer promised viewers that her take on the character would be ‘brand new’.

“You know my version of Harley is mine, and it’s very authentic to this movie and these characters,” the House of Gucci star told Access Hollywood.

“I’ve never done anything like I’ve done in this movie before, so it’s all going to be completely brand new and really fun.”

And Gaga has already received the seal of approval from Robbie, who said in 2022 that it was her dream for Harley to be a role that’s ‘passed from great actor to great actor’.

She added that she thinks Gaga will do ‘something incredible with it’.

Just in case you weren’t involved in all the hype, the sequel to Joker came out yesterday.

Ever since its release, fans have been quick to share their thoughts on the long-awaited teaser, with the same question ringing around on social media.

In fact, one fan said that they ‘f**king hate’ the changes.

Here’s the trailer, in case you missed it:

If you didn’t notice, it does look like there’ll be a strong musical element in the sequel, titled Joker: Folie à Deux.

There are numerous shots in the trailer that show the Arthur Fleck, aka the Joker (Joaquin Phoenix), dancing and singing with Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga), who has been introduced as the titular character’s love interest.

The trailer even scenes where the two perform to an audience at a club, dance around on a rooftop, and waltz through the streets of Gotham City.

It has naturally led fans to believe that the DC film could very well be a musical, especially given the involvement of Grammy-winning Lady Gaga.

Director Todd Phillips has recently come out and spoken about these rumours though, answering fans’ questions.

The 53-year-old filmmaker spoke at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Tuesday night (9 April), after he was questioned about the musical elements seen in the trailer for Folie à Deux (which translates to Madness for Two), and if it really will be a musical.

Phillips explained to Entertainment Weekly: “We never really talked about it like that, but I like to say it’s a film where music is an essential element,

“To me, that doesn’t veer too far from the first film.”

He also highlighted to films that all of it will ‘make sense’ when they sit down and watch the movie.

Phillips continued: “Arthur [Fleck]’s weird and aloof and all these things, but he has music in him. He has a grace to him,

“That informed a lot of the dancing in the first film. It didn’t feel like that big of a step here. It’s different, but I think it’ll make sense when you see it.”

The trailer shows Fleck continuing to terrorise Gotham City, but with Harley Quinn now at his side.

She has previously been depicted as psychiatrist Harleen Quinzel, who becomes romantically obsessed with the Joker, joining his life of crime.

Fans are still unaware of how closely the sequel will follow the characters’ origin story, though it looks like the two meet at a psychiatric ward before running away together.

The first film, released in 2019, looked at the mental decline of Arthur Fleck, an aspiring comedian, with the violent Joker persona emerging after being rejected in all aspects of his life.

Joker details how the man becomes a cult anti-hero, long before the days of Batman.

It was rated highly and highly-anticipated, though the success after its release was unexpected, as Phoenix won an Oscar for his portrayal of the character, with Joker going on to gross $1.08 billion (£856 million) at the box office, making it the most profitable R-rated movie ever made.

Joker: Folie à Deux will be released in theatres on 4 October 2024, five years to the day after the first film came out.

So the time has come, the trailer for Joker 2 – Folie à Deux – has finally dropped.

And it’s safe to say that fans have had a lot to say about it since it did. Check out the teaser for yourself:

It’s felt like an age since Todd Phillips’ masterpiece landed in cinemas back in 2019.

Starring Joaquin Phoenix – who won the Best Actor Oscar for the film – as the protagonist, it followed the pretty tragic story of Arthur Fleck, a party clown who’s down on his luck and feels cast out from society.

So, much like any villain worth his salt, he goes on a mad rampage to get revenge on those he feels he’s been slighted by.

But where are we five years on?

Well, as per the new trailer, Arthur seemingly has a new love interest in Harley Quinn, played by none other than Lady Gaga, and Phillips has decided to take the film in a slightly different direction: it’s a musical.

Oh, and that part of it has not gone down well with a lot of fans, who feel very strongly about it.

Taking to X, one salty critic said: “Damn just saw the Joker 2 trailer… Sad to see how they’ve ruined the sequel to such a great movie… I f**king hate musicals.

“That being said it’s probably going to be the best musical of all time and cinematography seems on point.”

Another chimed in: “I’d be a lot more excited for The Joker 2 if It wasn’t a damn musical smh.”

“Why is Joker 2 a musical? who’s dumb ass idea was that?” asked a third.

While someone else added: Joker 2 – Trailer released. It does look slick. I have huge reservations about the musical concept.

“But it also looks super in keeping with the first. Either way.. it looks a stylish movie.”

Not everyone was so horrified by the idea of the musical element, though.

Defending the premise, one user commented: “Joker 2 looks incredible.”

“Lady Gaga looks incredible in Joker 2. man, i can’t wait it to see it! another remarked.

Others, however, just couldn’t believe that Steve Coogan – yes, Alan Partridge – landed a part in the movie too.

Appearing briefly, we see his character questioning Arthur Fleck, and some just couldn’t get their heads round it.

“I actually laughed out loud when Steve Coogan appeared in the joker trailer,” put one, while someone else added: “The HOWL I emitted when STEVE COOGAN appeared.”

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what lies in store, as Joker: Folie à Deux will land in cinemas on October 4.
